The key function of the DevOps Engineer will be to architect and implement the tools, methods and automated processes needed for the successful deployment and ongoing operations of relevant solutions across a variety of products and services.
This role will involve working closely with the relevant Dimension Data MEA teams on operational and deployment requirements and matching an appropriate technical solution to those requirements. It will also involve ensuring a seamless deployment of the solution to the relevant business area. This may also the periodic provision of out of hours level 5 support for major production incidents.
“Develops, analyzes and maintains tools that support and automate processes for hardware or software product release. Writes installation scripts and programs for the installation of products. Works with project teams to determine an appropriate build schedule and then initiates the build and packaging process. Compiles and assembles software from source code. Ensures tools are stored in source control. Supports developers for software package registry and delivery. Works with others to complete analysis, evaluations and design alternatives and to implement process improvements. Works with development engineers to correct build errors.”
Key Roles and Responsibilities:
With an infrastructure as code approach you will architect, design and help implement a highly automated cloud-based deployment and operational model.
Be a strong advocate for a DevOps culture with our Development, Operations and Engineering teams.
Have an automation first approach to application and infrastructure deployment, setup and configuration.
Continue to deepen your scripting, coding and system administration skills and apply them to reduce time to market for services.
Assist with the identification and investigation of emerging technologies and associated migration paths to provide cost-effective and scalable solutions.
Monitor the external environment to gather intelligence on emerging technologies.
Assess and document the impacts, threats and opportunities to the organisation.
Create reports and technology roadmaps and shares knowledge and insights with others.
Provide advice, guidance and expertise to promote adoption of methods and tools and adherence to policies and standards.
Evaluate and select appropriate methods and tools in line with agreed policies and standards.
Manage reviews of the benefits and value of methods and tools and identifies and recommends improvements.
Contribute to organisational policies, standards, and guidelines for methods and tools.
Deals with problems and issues, managing resolutions, corrective actions, lessons learned and the collection and dissemination of relevant information.
Collect and use feedback from customers and stakeholders to help measure the effectiveness of stakeholder management.
Provide technical expertise to enable the configuration of software, other system components and equipment for systems testing.
Collaborate with technical teams to develop and agree on system integration plans and report on progress.
Define complex/new integration build and ensure that integration test environments are correctly configured.
Knowledge, Skills and Attributes:
Good working knowledge of infrastructure design, including network, storage and compute layers.
Deep product knowledge of relevant software products and services.
Knowledge and experience across the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC).
Demonstrated testing and quality assurance experience.
In-depth experience with at least one automated deployment tool, Chef, Salt and Jenkins experience highly regarded.
Expert level PowerShell / Python scripting experience and development experience with .Net
Extensive experience with Microsoft server platforms up to Windows Server 2012 R2, System Centre and PowerShell with a focus on automation and orchestration.
Working knowledge of relational databases and NoSQL databases
Experience with source control and build systems, GIT, TFS and Azure DevOps experience highly regarded.
Experience evaluating and integrating new technologies and products.
Previous System Administration and Operations experience with data centre infrastructure both physical and virtual.
Good understanding of Agile methodologies, preferably SAFe
Proven experience with Hyper Scaler Cloud IaaS, and PaaS. Azure and AWS experience highly regarded.
Academic Qualifications and Certifications:
Typically requires demonstrable related experience with a Bachelor or equivalent degree, or moderate level experience and a Masters or equivalent degree; or a PhD or equivalent degree without experience; or equivalent work experience.
Significant years of experience deploying software solutions to clients in an outsourced or similar IT environment.
Experience working in a multi-team environment across multiple geographies.
